PESHAWAR, 11 December: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak has suspended the station house officer (SHO) and other staff of Kotwali Police Station in Peshawar over arresting a citizen without any first information report (FIR) and subjecting him to torture.

The chief minister has also directed the police to remove unnecessary cordons from inside the city. According to a handout of the KP Information Department, Mr Khattak visited Kotwali Police Station on Saturday evening. The chief minister called the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and checked the record of the police station. He also inquired about the wellbeing of the people detained in the lock-up.

A detainee told the chief minister that he was detained on charges of stealing a laptop without any FIR and the policemen subjected him to severe torture. Mr Khattak expressed annoyance and said policemen were supposed to protect the citizens, not to torture them.

Member KP Assembly Shaukat Yousafzai and Peshawar Police chief Tahir Khan were also present on the occasion.
