PESHAWAR, October 15: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to record data of people living around all the prisons in the province.
The provincial government took this decision in the wake of the Karachi jail incident, where some people living close to the prison tried to dig an underground tunnel from a house to release a militant commander.
Official sources say security will also be beefed up at district and central jails, including central prisons of Peshawar, DI Khan and Haripur.
The bio data of people living in the jail colonies has already been collected. Now the authorities have decided to collect the data of other people living near the jails and the government and private offices located there.
On 30 July this year, militants helped 243 prisoners escape from the Dera Ismail Khan prison in one of the biggest jailbreaks in the history of Pakistan. In April 2012, hundreds of prisoners escaped during a similar jailbreak in Bannu.
