PARACHINAR, 18 August: More than 130 students of government and private schools were brought to the agency headquarters hospital on Thursday as their condition got deteriorated after reportedly eating substandard food from their schools’ canteens, officials said.

This was the second such incident in two days as more than 50 students of a private school fainted after eating substandard food from the school canteen on Wednesday.

Agency surgeon Dr. Moeen Begum told reporters here that the students started vomiting and had fever after eating food from school canteens. She added that state of emergency was declared in the agency headquarters hospital and the children were being treated in the hospital.

Zahid Hussain, a doctor at the hospital told TNN that the children were being treated and their condition was stable. He said all the doctors and paramedical staff were present in the hospital to provide treatment to the children.

The political administration of the Kurram agency closed down all private and public sector schools for two days in the agency. Besides, security has been also been tightened in the agency.

Member of National Assembly Sajid Tori feared it might be an act of terrorism to poison school children. He demanded of the political authorities to probe the matter thoroughly.

Meanwhile, political authorities have said the food items being sold in schools’ canteens would be tested. The authorities have also convened a meeting of the heads of all private and government schools.
