PESHAWAR, 21 November: The National Assembly has approved a new bill about power production, transmission and distribution under which three-year imprisonment will be awarded to staffers on overbilling.

According to the bill, National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will have the powers of investigating such cases. Minister for Energy Awais Ahmed Leghari presented the bill in the National Assembly on Monday which was approved by the House.

According to the bill, no person will be allowed to give electricity connection to anyone without the NEPRA licence. Laying of power transmission lines and ensuring smooth supply of electricity will be the responsibility of power generation companies. The bill envisioned that the federal government will form policy about electricity after approval of Council of Common Interests. A tribunal will also be set up to deal with the legal issues in this regard. A former judge of the high court will head the tribunal who will be appointed for a period of three years. Representatives from all the provinces and Centre will be included in the tribunal.
