PESHAWAR, 14 August: The nation is celebrating 69 Independence Day with traditional fervour and zeal today (Friday).

The day dawned with 31-gun salute in the federal capital Islamabad and 21-gun salute in the provincial capitals of Peshawar, Lahore, Karachi and Quetta. Special prayers were held in the mosques for solidarity and prosperity of Pakistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in his message on the occasion of Independence Day pledged to put the country and democracy first during all circumstances and make efforts for development of the country.

President Mamnoon Hussain also hoisted the national flag at the main ceremony in Convention Centre, Islamabad. The ceremony was also attended by the prime minister, federal ministers, military officers, foreign ambassadors and other dignitaries.

All the government buildings have been decorated with national flags and illuminations, while the citizens have also decorated their houses, buildings and vehicles to celebrate the Independence Day.

Overseas Pakistanis and Pakistani missions abroad are also celebrating the Independence Day in their respective countries.

The purpose of Independence Day celebrations is to pay tributes to the country’s leaders who paid many sacrifices for independence of Pakistan from the British rule and renew pledge for serving and safeguarding the country.
