PESHAWAR, 9 December: Afghan president Ashraf Ghani has arrived in Islamabad to attend Heart of Asia Conference.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif welcomed the Afghan president at Nur Khan Airbase on Wednesday morning. A 21-gun salute was also presented in the honour of the visiting dignitary.

Later, Nawaz Sharif and Ashraf Ghani jointly opened the Heart of Asia Conference. The conference will focus on regional security with special emphasis on security situation in Afghanistan. Representatives from 14 countries including India, China, Russia and Saudi Arabia are attending the conference.

Mr Sharif while addressing the conference said Pakistan is proud to host Heart of Asia Conference. He said Pakistan strongly believes that peace and development in Afghanistan and Pakistan are interlinked. He said Pakistan has suffered a lot in the ongoing war on terror and it is time to join hands to counter this threat.

The Afghan president thanked Pakistan for hosting the conference. He also thanked the participants for attending the event and said peace is basic requirement for development. He said work on development schemes in Afghanistan promised by the neighbouring countries should commence without further delay.

The first Heart of Asia Conference was arranged in Turkey by the host country and Afghanistan after which the event is being organised every year.
