PESHAWAR: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were released from Adiala Jail on parole late Tuesday night to attend the funeral of former first lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz who passed away in London.
Nawaz and Maryam boarded a special plane after being released from Adiala Jail in order to be taken to Jati Umra where the funeral will be arranged. Members of the Sharif family were also reportedly on the special plane going to Lahore.
Begum Kulsoom Nawaz died at the age of 68 after several months in a coma. She was diagnosed with lymphoma last year and was receiving treatment at a London hospital. Her condition worsened on Monday after which she was put on ventilator.
Earlier, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the government has received a request for parole which will be granted. Prime Minister Imran Khan had also assured the government’s assistance to the bereaved family as per law.
Sad to learn of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz's death. She was a courageous woman of great dignity and confronted her disease with fortitude. My condolences and prayers go to the Sharif family.
