PESHAWAR, 2 November: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Pakistan from London on Thursday to appear before the accountability court in corruption references.

Strict security arrangements were made at Islamabad Airport on the arrival of Nawaz Sharif. Federal Minister Saad Rafique and other leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) were present at the airport to welcome Nawaz Sharif who went to the Punjab House.

Before his departure for Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif said in London that he is well aware that he has been subjected to vengeance in the name of accountability. However, he said, he will appear in the court out of respect for the judicial system. He said he is visiting Pakistan despite advice of doctors to stay with his ailing wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

The accountability court had earlier issued bailable warrant for Nawaz Sharif in two references of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) regarding illegal assets. The court said non-bailable warrant will be issued against Nawaz Sharif if he failed to appear before the court on 3 November.
