PESHAWAR, 26 August: The peons at neighbourhood councils of Peshawar on Friday staged a protest demonstration in front of Peshawar Press Club over fears that they might be removed from jobs.

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) naib ameer for Peshawar chapter Haji Fazlullah Daudzai was leading the protest. The protesters said the Peshawar deputy commissioner has issued notification for appointment of 250 peons at neighbourhood councils of Peshawar and all the legal formalities in this regard have also been fulfilled. They said some members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly are now asking the deputy commissioner to cancel these appointments as the appointment of peons and watchmen is their prerogative.

Haji Fazlullah told TNN that despite issuance of employment orders, some lawmakers are now trying to remove these poor people from their jobs.

“We will move the court for the rights of these employees and we will stand with them,” he said.
