PESHAWAR, 16 October: The United States Department of State has appointed Richard Olson as special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan from next month.

Richard Olson, who is presently serving as US Ambassador to Pakistan, will assume charge of his new responsibilities from 17 November. Daniel F. Feldman, who was the US special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, had retired on 18 September.

Mr Olson will be responsible for implementing policies and programmes to promote US interests in the region and to bring peace and prosperity in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Olson has rich experience of diplomatic services in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He is serving as US Ambassador to Pakistan for the last three years. Prior to that, Olson was serving as Coordinating Director for Development and Economic Affairs at US Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, from 2011 to 2012. He also served as US Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates from 2008 to 2011. Olson is a member of the Senior Foreign Service, and has served at the US State Department since 1982.
