KHAR: One person lost his life, while a girl sustained injuries when a mortar shell fired from Afghan side landed in Salarzai tehsil of Bajaur tribal district on Wednesday.
The local administration said the mortar shell was fired from Kunar province of Afghanistan which landed in a populated area in Gardao village, situated near the border. Police said a mortar shell landed on a house which killed a local person, Bakhtullah, while an eight-year-old girl, Rashida Bibi, was injured.
Several cattle were also killed in the blast of mortar shell.
The incident created an atmosphere of panic in the area. The local Tarkhani and Utmankhel tribes of Bajaur strongly condemned mortar attack in the area and demanded the Afghan government to make sure that its land is not used against Pakistan in future.
It was not clear whether the mortar shell was fired by militants or the Afghan security forces. No one claimed responsibility for the incident.
Such incidents have also happened in Bajaur and other tribal districts bordering Afghanistan in the past which claimed several lives. The Pakistan government raises the issue with Afghan officials from time to time and urge them to ensure no use of their land for any subversive act in Pakistan.
