BANNU, 05 May: Excise Department has started operation against tax evading landowners here today.

In the first day of the operation, four shops were sealed in Qasabano Bazaar. The shopkeepers, on the other side, said that they should be not be punished for the negligence of the owners of the shops who did not pay property tax. The shops have been rented out to them.

“It’s an injustice to us on the part of shop owners who doubled rent but did not deposit tax. We should not have been held responsible for this. Every shop owner should give Rs. 1,000 on daily basis for each sealed rented shops,” they said.

Head of the Excise Department in Bannu Tariq Mehsud said that property tax on these shops was pending for the last 10 to 15 years.

He emphatically stated that until and unless they pay the taxes the sealed shops would not be opened. “They would have to pay these taxes. Evading taxes is akin to plundering the nation. The tax money is outstanding against them for the last 10 to 15 years,” he said, adding that the operation would be extended to the entire district.
