PESHAWAR: Federal Railway minister Shaikh Rasheed Ahmad on Saturday inaugurated new train, Rahman Baba Express train, at Peshawar railway station.The high speed Rehman Baba Express Train will start operation on Sunday.

The train is named after Pashto Sufi poet Abdul Rahman Baba. It will run between Peshawar and Karachi.

Rasheed while talking to media after the train inauguration said that Pakistan railway has also planned a new track from Peshawar to Karachi. He added that work will start on before March, next year.

Shaikh Rashid said that the new track will be known as ML-1 and its total length will be over 1700 kilometer. It will be a double track with a speed of at least 160 Kilometer per hour while its maximum speed will be 260 km/hour.

“We are going to change the entire 100 years old structure of our Railway,” said Rasheed. He claimed that the new track will be completed in five years.

The federal minister lamented that the railway ministry has no resources, it’s kitty is empty, it has incurred a loss of 40 billion and it is under Rs 25 billion loan but efforts are underway to revive railways and make it a profitable entity.

He informed that twenty new trains and three tourist trains would be launched next year while government was also planning to start two VIP trains. He said that to boost economic activities number of trade trains would be increased to fifteen.

Replying to a question regarding the revival of British era Dargai-Nowshera railway track, Shaikh Rashid said that they are also looking for the revival.

Expressing concerns over the appointment of Shahbaz Sharif as head of public accounts committee, Rasheed alleged that “The biggest thief in the country has been made the head of PEC by the national assembly.”
