PESHAWAR: A poisonous plant called Parthenium in Shawa area of ​​Swabi district has disturbed farmers as this plant has hazardous impacts on their crops as well as on human lives.

During the conversation with TNN, a local farmer from Shawa, Said Jamal, said that the plant is locally called ‘Gajar Boti ’ is spreading fast in their agriculture fields which is a matter of concern as the crops are under direct threat from it. He said that it is harmful to crops as well as to humans. If a person touches it, he becomes irritated.  Jamal revealed that some of the infected patients were taken to doctors in Peshawar where they also said that it was a dangerous plant.

Syed Jameel demanded the government to provide medicines to end the plant so that their crops and humans could be protected from it.

Agriculture Department Field Assistant Mohammad Naeem agreed with Syed Jamal and told TNN that the losses incurred by this plant were immense. He said that the plant came to Pakistan and India from the United States which caused a lot of damage to crops in both the countries.

He said that where this plant grows, it eliminates other plants and strengthens its roots. According to Mohammed Naeem, skin diseases are spreading from this plant besides if the cattle eat it, it causes bitterness in their milk. He also said that the plant spreads very quickly and appears twice a year. He advised the farmers that when they see this plant, remove it from the roots and burn it when it is dry.

What do agricultural experts say?

According to agronomists, it is a poisonous plant that looks very different from other herbs. The special thing about this plant, he added, it begins to flower immediately after birth, which continues to grow. This plant harms a variety of crops and releases toxic substances from its roots into the soil; if these toxins are present in sufficient quantities in the earth, the other plants will be unable to grow, said the agronomist.

According to experts, its effects on human skin are very noticeable and painful, human skin becomes reddish-brown when it touches, and it feels very irritated, thus those who come in contact with faces cough, asthma, skin disease, eye irritation and allergies.

Experts said that it has very negative impacts on eyes and it results in inflammation and runny nose. Most of the effects on the animals are on the nose and mouth. Animals do not eat it first but if a cattle accidentally eats it, cattle will feel pain as well as milk and meat quality deteriorate.

Agricultural experts say that plant’s productive capacity is greatly increased in spring, so all farmers should inspect their fields on a weekly basis and pay special attention to avoid the growth of this plant. If it was not destroyed on time then it is difficult to dispose of it. In addition, various types of agricultural drugs can be used, including Ami-trains, Estrazine, and this Metachlor but be sure to follow the instructions on the label before using the medication.

Identification of parthenium herbs

 1) When the plant is grown, it looks like a carrot plant, with its leaves in a circle near the ground.

 2) This weed is clearly small, five-star shaped and white in colour, about 6 mm in size.

 3) It produces many flowers, one plant can produce 10000 batches which are spread by air and water.

 4) The leaves are light green to dark green

 5) In addition, parthenium plants have a long deep root.
