Pervez Musharraf announces formation of 23-party grand alliance

PESHAWAR, 11 November: Former president and chief of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf has announced to form a grand alliance of 23 political parties with the name of Pakistan Awami Ittehad.

According to BBC, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, leader of the Sunni Ittehad Council, which is part of the alliance, said it was an initial effort and formal code of conduct for the alliance will be made later. He said it was not an electoral alliance and its main purpose was to pinpoint the main problems of the country and work for their resolution.

Hamid Raza said some parties in the alliance are ready to contest the next elections under the leadership of Pervez Musharraf, while others have some reservations.

The APML sources said effort has been made to unite all the factions of the Pakistan Muslim League which will boost election prospects for Musharraf. Political analysts say the formation of the alliance indicates a bright future for Musharraf in politics of Pakistan.

The announcement by Musharraf came after six religious parties of the country, including the JI of Sirajul Haq and JUI of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, announced revival of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) for contesting the next elections.
