PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) granted conditional bail to Human Rights activist Gulalai Ismails’ father Professor Muhammad Ismail on Monday.
The order was issued by PHC’s single-judge bench of Justice Qaisar Rashid Khan while hearing the bail plea filed through Advocate Shahab Khattak and Fazal Khan. The justice approved Gulalai’s father’s bail and ordered his release.
Professor Ismail, who is also an active member of Pashtun Tahaffuz movement, will be released from Jail today. The court also directed him to “be careful” in the future. He was asked to submit a surety of Rs100,000 as well as personal guarantees from two individuals.
It is to be noted that Professor Ismail was arrested in front of the Peshawar High Court a month ago when he was returning home. On October 25, Rights activist Gulalai Ismail’s father was sent to jail on 14-day judicial remand after a case was registered against him by persons namely Sajid Iqbal, Ali Ahmad, Riazur Rehman and Walid Mir on October 8.
They have accused him of hate speech and sharing fake information against state institutions on Facebook and Twitter. It said the professor’s Facebook and Twitter IDs, passwords and a mobile phone were seized by the FIA.
Justice Qaiser Rashid, on this occasion, expressed anger over the absence of any member of the Advocate General office to represent the government in the case. Justice Qaiser remarked that such people have been appointed in the AG office who are not even bothering to appear in the court. The justice said that he is writing in the order the law officers of the provincial government are not appearing in the court and the order will be sent to provincial law minister and the attorney general of Pakistan.
The judge subsequently imposed a fine of Rs50, 000 on the AG’s office and banned the entry of the assistant AG to his court.
