PESHAWAR, 11 December: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday announced a grant of Rs1 billion for Islamia College University (ICU).

The prime minister made the announcement on the occasion of centenary celebrations of the ICU. On the occasion the prime minister also announced Rs50 million for the welfare of the students and teachers.

In his speech, Mr Sharif said ICU is a great institution of learning and a large number of eminent personalities graduated from it. He said the graduates of the ICU inside the country and abroad are bringing good name for Pakistan. He said he is very happy over his visit to the ICU and pledged that all the requirements of the university will be fulfilled on priority basis. He said he would like to visit Islamia College regularly.

Earlier on his arrival, the premier was received by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan, Speaker KP Assembly Asad Qasiar, vice chancellor and principal of the ICU.

Meanwhile, worst traffic jam was witnessed in Peshawar during the prime minister’s visit to Islamia College. The traffic was jammed completely from the University Road till Hayatabad Phase 3 Chowk due to which the commuters faced many hardships.

A commuter told TNN that he walked up to 10 kilometres to reach his office due to severe traffic jam. “Many students of schools and colleges were stranded on the roads due to strictest security measures and non-availability of public transport,” he said.
