NOWSHERA: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday inaugurated the newly-constructed dry port in Azakhel area of Nowshera.
The dry port has been completed with a cost of Rs510 million. The dry port will boost trade and economic activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and entire region.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Imran Khan said the government is investing in railways because it is the mean of travel for the common man. He said the previous governments did not invest in railways because their policies hovered around benefiting the rich. He said the government is making endeavours to make railways a profitable institution.
The premier said the government wants to give maximum relief to masses. He said elderly people travelling in trains have been given special concession on tickets. He said stalls will also be built on railway platforms for women vendors to provide them a source of income.
Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak were also present on the occasion.
Sheikh Rashid proposed a Peshawar-Jalalabad rail route on the ML-1 track to curb smuggling. He said it would connect Pakistan to Afghanistan and Central Asian states. The minister said the proposed railway track would pass through Loe Shalman area of Khyber tribal district, mountainous terrains and beautiful landscapes of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said Nowshera-Dargai railways section will also be opened to promote tourism.
Azakhel Dry Port, the largest in KP and second largest in the country, is situated in Pirpai area, at distance of eight kilometres from the main city. The dry port is connected to Peshawar through a road. The dry port will help in easy transportation of goods from Karachi Port go inside country and Afghanistan via road.
Pakistan Railways has acquired 64 acres land for the dry port and work on 28 acres land has been completed in the first phase.
Cylinder blasts in Nowshera and Peshawar
At least 12 persons were injured in a gas cylinder blast in Khat Killi area of Nowshera on Friday.
Gas leakage caused a blast in a house where a wedding function was underway. The injured persons, including women and children, were shifted to Nowshera Medical Complex where condition of three children was stated to be critical.
Meanwhile, a blast at a CNG filling station on Charsadda Road in Peshawar killed a woman and injured three children.
A car gas cylinder exploded during filling at the CNG station due to which a woman and three children were injured. The woman succumbed to her injures during treatment at hospital.
