PESHAWAR: Senator of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Faisal Javed Khan has announced that the Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar to lay the foundation stone of Mohmand dam on May 2.
“Prime Minister Imran Khan to perform the ground-breaking of Mohmand Dam on 2nd May 2019,” Faisal Javed Khan said on Twitter on Tuesday. “Special thanks to all the donors who are contributing for this great cause.”
A Pakistani Company — Descon owned by Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce, Textile, Industry & Production and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood and a Chinese company – China Gezhouba has been awarded construction of Rs309 billions Mohmand Dam project.
The contract in this regard was signed on March 26, 2019, at WAPDA head office in Islamabad. The WAPDA spokesperson said that Ministry of Water and power has saved Rs 18 billion from the allocated amount for the construction of Mohmand Dam.
Mohmand Dam will be constructed at River Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The dam is expected to generate 800 Mega Watts electricity. It will have the capacity to 1.2 million acre-feet (MAF) water. With the construction of the dam, District Nowshera, Charsadda and Peshawar will be protected from floods, which have devastated the infrastructure in the past.
Water and power development authority said that the dam will irrigate 16,000-acre land besides supplying water to 1, 60,000-acre land. Locals of Peshawar will be provided 300 million gallons of clean drinking water. It is expected that if the Dam was constructed on time, it will yield a benefit of Rs 52 m every year.
The ground-breaking ceremony of the much-awaited Mohmand Dam project has been delayed once again. The federal ministry of water and power said that a new date will be announced soon.
The Ministry has earlier announced that the foundation stone of the dam will be laid down on January 13 by the Prime Minister Imran Khan. Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar was also invited to participate in the ceremony.
The groundbreaking ceremony of Mohmand dam was first scheduled for January 2.
