PESHAWAR, 27 March: Police have arrested eight people of a Jirga for giving a girl as Swara to resolve a dispute in Upper Dir.
Swara is a custom in which a girl is given to a rival party in marriage to settle a dispute. Though the government has banned the practice, sometimes such incidents take place in remote areas.
Sher Rehman, deputy superintendent of police in the area, said that a local Jirga between two groups had compelled a five-year-girl Kalsoom to get married to four-year old boy Zikria as Swara.
He added that children had been taken into custody and that eight members of the Jirga had been put behind bars, including some relatives of the children.
