Police, Khassadars exchange fire over jurisdiction issue in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Tension prevailed in Karkhano area of Peshawar after the Peshawar Police and Khassadar Force personnel exchanged fire on the issue of jurisdiction on Saturday.

According to initial reports, Khassadar Force personnel have arrested some policemen, while the Peshawar Police has also arrested some Khassadars after exchange of fire at Karkhano check post. However, no life loss was reported in the incident. A heavy contingent of police reached the Karkhano check post after the incident.

Peshawar Police said a car was stolen from Islamabad and police intercepted the car in Hayatabad. The receiver of the stolen car was standing on Karkhano Phattak.

Police said the assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Hayatabad talked to Jamrud assistant commissioner for arrest of the car lifter and he gave go ahead, but when police tried to arrest the car lifter, the Khassadar Force personnel started firing. Police said they showed maximum restraint during the whole episode.

The firing has stopped now and both the sides are negotiating to resolve the issue peacefully.

The government through a notification two days ago merged Khyber tribal district in Peshawar Division under the 25th constitutional amendment. However, the future role of Khassadars after merger of erstwhile Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains undecided.
