PESHAWAR, 10 November: The polio vaccination campaign which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday has been postponed in Shangla and Buner districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Bajaur Agency of FATA.

Sources in the district administrations of Shangla and Buner districts said the concerned departments have focussed all their energies towards relief and rehabilitation of the earthquake affected people and they are not fully prepared to carry out the polio vaccination campaign. The FATA Secretariat sources said the political administration of Bajaur Agency is also occupied with relief and rehabilitation of the quake affected people and cannot pay required attention to the vaccination campaign. Polio campaign in these areas will be carried out in the current month.

Polio drops will be administered to 5.4 million children in KP and 900,000 children in FATA in the four-day campaign which kicked off on Tuesday. A statement of the FATA Secretariat said the polio vaccination campaign will continue for seven days in North Waziristan, Frontier Region Bannu and Bara and Jamrud tehsils of Khyber Agency.

The three-day polio vaccination campaign also got under way in Balochistan on Tuesday during which over 2.45 million children below the age of five years will be given polio drops.
