SWAT/CHITRAL, 4 November: The heavy  rain and snowfall in the mountainous region of Swat and Chitral have added to the worries of earthquake affected people living in damaged houses and tents.

The rainfall and snowfall has continued for last two days causing the closure of Lawari tunnel that has suspended flow of relief items to Chitral district.

On the other hand,  quake affected people in Sedo Sharif area of Swat are looking for shelter against the severe cold and rainy weather. At least 40 houses were damaged by the earthquake in the area after which the government provided tents to the residents of the affected houses.

However, local people have complained that the tents were small and made of low quality materials that could not protect them and their children against the harsh weather.

“We are living in a rented house to reconstruct our own damaged house in this cold weather. However  the government has not reached out to us for help yet. We want the government to pay us compensation for the damaged houses immediately” said one of the quake affected person.

He said that they did not have enough firewood to keep themselves warm in the upcoming unbearable cold weather.

Assistant Commissioner Swat Ishfaq Khan said that more 2500 houses have been badly damaged in Swat district  during the recent earthquake saying  residents of those houses have been given rations and tents.

However, he said that the government was working on a plan to reduce the hardships being faced by quake affected people during the winter season.
