CHITRAL, 14 November: The earthquake affected people of the far flung Charoon Ower area of Chitral on Friday staged protest demonstration over not receiving government aid.

The protesters that also included schoolchildren blocked the road leading from Booni to Chitral from morning till evening. The protesters said 95 houses were completely destroyed in the area in the 26 October earthquake and 140 others were damaged. They said the government has provided only 49 tents for the quake affected people in the area and the financial assistance announced by the government has not been provided.

A protester told TNN that their children are forced to spend nights under the open sky in this extremely cold weather. “Yesterday’s snowfall has made the situation worst for us. After failing to get any assistance, we were compelled to come on road to demand our right,” he said.

Another protester said the people of the area survived in the earthquake but they might not survive the extreme cold weather under the open sky. “We came here on the road after the government failed to honour its promise of assisting the quake affected people,” she said.

The protesters dispersed in the evening after assurance of Member Provincial Assembly Syed Sardar Hussain that compensation cheques will be given to them soon. He said the government has already dispatched the compensation cheques to the district administration.
