Reconstruction, development of tribal districts govt top priority: PM

PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said reconstruction and development of the tribal districts was the top priority of the government.

Chairing a high-level meeting regarding reconstruction and development of the tribal districts at the Prime Minister Office on Saturday, Imran Khan directed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mehmood Khan to ensure provision of all basic facilities in the erstwhile Fata. He directed that health cards must be provided to 500,000 families in the tribal districts by the end of this month.

KP Governor Shah Farman, Chief Minister Mehmood Khan, Adviser to PM Shahzad Arbab, Special Assistant Iftikhar Durrani, KP Minister for Revenue Taimoor Salim Jhagra and senior officials attended the meeting. Matters pertaining to administrative affairs, health, education, law and order and development schemes in the tribal districts and implementation status of the merger process were reviewed during the meeting. It was decided that the provincial cabinet would review progress of development schemes and reforms in the tribal districts in its monthly meetings.

The premier said recruitment process in police and other departments must be initiated immediately to provide jobs to the tribal youth. He said the provincial ministers and officials must regularly visit the merged districts and review ongoing projects and merger process. He also emphasised enforcement of local bodies system in the tribal districts on priority basis.

Imran Khan said tribal areas suffered a lot from terrorism. He said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was committed to resolve all the issues of the tribal areas.

The PM Office meeting was a follow-up meeting after the premier headed a meeting in Peshawar on 14 December, 2018 during which he directed the authorities to provide health, education and utilities to the people of tribal areas. He had ordered to constitute an implementation committee for the reforms. The committee will be headed by the KP governor and chief minister.

On 31 December, 2018, the premier had stated that development and progress of tribal districts was the top priority of PTI government.

Presiding over a high-level meeting to review the facilities of education, heath, administrative issues and peace, Imran Khan had ordered to expedite efforts to extend the local government system in the tribal districts.
