PESHAWAR, 7 October: The residents of Hazar Khwani on Wednesday protested against the ongoing anti-encroachment drive by Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) and blocked the ring road at Jamil Chowk for hours.

The protestors burnt tires on the road and chanted slogans against the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and PDA. They said that the provincial government had started anti-encroachment drive without giving prior legal notices to them. They added that PDA was destroying their properties on the bother sides of ring road without paying compensation to them.

One of the protestors Sadaqatullah said that the government had signed an agreement with the local people back in 1992 that local residents would not construct property within 52 feet of the ring road. “Though we respected the agreement, the government encroached on our lands and destroyed our properties which is clear violation of the pact”, he said adding that “either government should compensate us or stop the drive”.

The protestors said that they would stop the protest if the government compensates them for their property loses.  Later they ended the protest and dispersed peacefully.
