PESHAWAR, April 29: Residents of several suburban areas of the provincial capital Peshawar have warned the authorities that they would pull down the electricity towers if the power supply lines to their areas were not restored.

The demonstrators included residents of Badaber, Koh-e-Daman and Tappa Mohmand areas.

Talking to journalists at the Peshawar Press Club on 28 April, members of a welfare committee of Badaber area said the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) had cut off electricity connections to several areas about three weeks ago. As a result, 25 villages are facing blackout and water shortage, they added.

A leader of the committee, Mr Zafar, told TNN, “On the one hand we are suffering due to militancy and on the other the suspension of power supply has adversely affected our businesses.”

Mr Zafar warned that the residents would stage protests and raze to ground electricity towers in Sheikh Mohammadi area if the authorities did not resume power supply to them.

However, the PESCO officials said they had cut off power supply to the areas because of power theft by the residents.

Local people say they have asked the PESCO time and again to install electricity metres in their areas but that the authorities did not take any action till now.
