PESHAWAR, 20 December: Russia’s ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was shot dead in Ankara on Monday when he was addressing participants of an art exhibition.
The 22-years-old attacker, who was a Turkish policeman, was also killed by the security forces. The attacker was uttering words after shooting dead Karlov which indicated that he was killed for alleged Russian interference in the Syrian civil war. Some other people present in the hall were also injured in the firing.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said it was an attack on the Turkish nation.
On the other hand, Russian President Viladimir Putin said the attack was carried out to spoil Russia-Turkey relations and foil efforts to bring peace in Syria. He said Russia will raise the issue in the United Nations Security Council.
The assassination of the Russian envoy happened amid protests in Turkey against Russian interference in Syria. The United Nations and several other countries condemned the killing of the Russian envoy.
