PESHAWAR: In a setback for the PTI, the PML-N won the by-election in NA-154 Lodhran by a huge margin of 27,000 votes on Monday.
According to unofficial results accounted late Monday night, the PML-N’s Iqbal Shah defeated PTI’s Ali Tareen Khan, son of Jehangir Tareen, with a huge margin of 27,000 votes in the hotly contested by-election.
According to the unofficial results of 338 polling stations, the PML-N candidate had a lead of 116,000 votes while the PTI candidate lagged behind with nearly 91,000 votes.
The polling started in 338 polling stations at 8:00am in the morning and was conducted under the watchful eyes of army personnel in all the polling stations of the constituency. The government had deployed 4,000 security personnel in the constituency to avoid any untoward development and to ensure free and fair conduct during the by-poll.
The seat fell vacant after Jehangir Tareen was disqualified by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Following his disqualification, the PTI announced that Jahangir’s son Ali Khan Tareen would be the party’s candidate for NA-154 by-poll.
Political analysts are terming the PML-N candidate’s victory in the by-poll as a huge setback for the PTI where it was considered favourite to win the election. However, the PTI chief Imran Khan tried to console his party workers by saying that it will help the party learn from its mistakes.
On the other hand, the PML-N leadership celebrated the victory and termed it an indication that they are favourites to win the next general elections.
