PESHAWAR: Unknown armed gunmen shot dead a Sikh religious leader and rights activist on the outskirts of Peshawar on Tuesday.
Identified as Charnjit Singh, 52, the deceased was dunned down inside his shop in Scheme Chowk area, the police said.
They said that attacker was probably alone who made his escape good after committing the crime, however, it could not be confirmed if it was target-killing incident or a result of personal enmity. The police have registered a case against unknown persons and started investigation.
The deceased was residing in Peshawar but basically hailed from Kurram Agency. His murder has sent a shock wave among the community as several Sikhs have been killed in different parts of the city in the past.
Most of the Sikhs residing in Peshawar are those whose families previously resided in different parts of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) but shifted to Peshawar due to security reasons and started different businesses.
