KOHISTAN: Six people lost their lives when a vehicle fell into a deep ravine at Karakorum Highway in Kohistan on Sunday.

Police said a vehicle was travelling from Gilgit to Samarbagh area of Lower Dir when it went out of driver’s control in Kohistan district on Karakorum Highway and fell into a deep ravine. The vehicle was travelling speedily and the Silk Route was slippery due to rain.

Police reached the spot immediately and initiated rescue work with the help of local people. The bodies were shifted to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Pattan from where they were shifted to their native areas for burial.

Police said all the deceased belong to Samarbagh area of Lower Dir. The people sitting in the vehicle were going to Lower Dir to celebrate Eid with their families. The deceased were identified as Inayatullah, Sultan Zareen, Umair, Asgharuddin and Muhammad Umar.

There is no official rescue service in Kohistan due to which the local people and police collected donations to arrange private vehicle to shift the bodies to hospital.

Traffic accidents routinely happen in all parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which often causes casualties. The main cause of traffic accidents is poor condition of roads and untrained drivers.

Woman, daughter drown in Mohmand

A chairlift fell into Indus River in Mohmanad tribal district due to breaking of its rope due to which a woman and her daughter drowned on Sunday.

Eidul Azha was being observed in some parts of Mohmand district on Sunday. A woman along with her three-year-old daughter was crossing the river through chairlift to go to her parents’ house in Prang area when the rope of the chairlift broke and it fell into the river.

Local sources said there was no Rescue 1122 facility in Mohmand tribal district due to which the local administration called a rescue team from Charsadda. The rescue team after hectic efforts retrieved the body of the three-year-old girl, while search for the body of the woman was continuing till filing of this report.

The local people said the local member of provincial assembly, local administration and rescue personnel are supervising the rescue officers, which was continuing till filing of this report.

Due to lack of a proper bridge people cross the river in chairlift, which is a risky option.
