PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Imran Khan said in Wednesday that the government will take all necessary steps for mainstreaming marginalised youth of the tribal districts by introducing youth empowerment initiatives of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The prime minister was addressing a meeting attended by Special Assistant on Youth Affairs Muhammad Usman Dar and UNDP’s Resident Representative in Pakistan Ignacio Artaza in the federal capital. The prime minister said skill development, especially of the youth of the tribal districts, is a priority area for his government. On the occasion, the UNDP pledged $30million for education, employment and social engagement of Pakistani youth.

Usman Dar also briefed the prime minister about ‘Taleemi Razakar’ Programme and efforts to integrate madrassah students into mainstream by providing them greater opportunities.

The prime minister appreciated UNDP for its continued commitment and engagement with Pakistan for education, employment and skills development of the youth. The prime minister was briefed about the UNDP’s Youth Empowerment Programme which, in collaboration with Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, aims to support youth engagement and empowerment initiatives across the country, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal districts.

The PM’s special assistant informed Imran Khan about joint efforts being made along with the UNDP to engage youth groups and stakeholders on government’s upcoming youth initiatives such as the first ever National Youth Conference, National Youth Development Index and National Youth Development Programme. Usman Dar appreciated the UNDP’s technical and resource assistance for the government’s efforts to design the National Youth Development Programme that will serve as an umbrella platform for all youth focused initiatives.

Youth Empowerment Programme aims to promote youth empowerment by reducing young women and men’s vulnerability and exclusion through a three pronged approach of jobs and economic empowerment, social engagement and education and skills development. This program aims to empower two hundred thousand marginalised and excluded youth across the country.

Last week, the prime minister said during his visit to Peshawar that the PTI government would present a programme for poverty reduction by the end of this month aimed at enabling the people stand on their own feet and lead a life with dignity. Imran Khan also launched the Sehat Insaf Cards programme to provide free treatment facilities to patients of the tribal districts.
