DERA ISMAIL KHAN, 06 December: The sugarcane growers have announced to hold a protest demonstration on Monday against sugar mill owners for delaying in starting crushing season.
The Chamber of Agriculture, DI Khan chapter held a meeting here Sunday which was attended by sugarcane growers and other office bearers of the chamber.
“The mills owners had committed that they will start crushing season in November. December has started and they yet to start the crushing season,” one of the chamber members said while talking to TNN.
He said their sugarcane crop worth billions of rupees would be rotted if the crushing was not started immediately.
The meeting called on all the farmers to come to Haq Nawaz Park to record their protest. The farmers said they would also block the Indus Highway, linking Peshawar with Quetta and Karachi as part of their protest.
Meanwhile, sources privy to sugar mill owners said the crushing season was delayed as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government did not pay the subsidy so far.
