PESHAWAR, May 21: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued a notice to the provincial government of Punjab over suspending wheat supply to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

A Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Mr Liaqat Baloch, filed a petition in the court recently, saying that the federal government had fixed a quota of 45 metric tons wheat from Punjab province for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but that Punjab had now refused to supply the wheat.

Hearing the case, Justice Jawad S Khwaja said Pakistan lacked food, while on the other hand the Punjab government was supplying wheat to Afghanistan.

The court issued a notice to the Punjab government to submit reply by 28 May.

Two days ago, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Flourmills Association had warned to forcibly stop wheat supply from Punjab to Afghanistan via Torkham border if the wheat supply was not restored to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
