MARDAN, 30 November: The administration of Takht Bhai tehsil of Mardan has given a deadline of one week to shopkeepers to remove black colour polythene shopping bags.

A meeting in this regard was chaired by Assistant Commissioner Ashfaq Ahmed Khan on Sunday which was attended by Tehsil Nazim Mumtaz Ali Khan, representatives of trade union and other officials. The assistant commissioner said black colour polythene bags not only pollute the environment but also cause various diseases.

An awareness walk about the disadvantages of polythene bags was also held in the bazaar after the meeting.

The shopkeepers were asked to remove the existing stock of black polythene bags within a week. The administration said action will be taken against shopkeepers if they were found involved in selling black polythene bags after expiry of the deadline.

The local people while talking to TNN appreciated the administration for banning black polythene bags.

“Polythene bags are non-biodegradable which cause pollution in the atmosphere. Now the government is introducing biodegradable bags which is a very good step for the environment and the people,” a citizen said.

Another citizen said polythene bags are seen lying all over the place everywhere. “Polythene bags have caused nuisance everywhere. The government deserves appreciation for eliminating these polythene bags,” he said.
