KHAR, 18 November: The first thalassaemia centre of FATA was inaugurated in Bajaur Agency on Friday.

A minor thalassaemia-affected girl inaugurated the centre. Bajaur Political Agent Aamir Khattak said on the occasion that the administration will provide funding for the centre until it receives funds from the Pakistan Baitul Mal. He said camps will be organised every month to collect blood from security forces personnel, students and other volunteers.

Senator Hidayatullah, Colonel Naeem Akbar, Health Department officials and local elders were present on the occasion.

The building of the thalassemia centre was completed six months back, buts its inauguration was delayed for unknown reasons. Three thalassemia patients have been registered in the centre so far and salaries of the staff are being paid from Bajaur Sports Development Fund.

Bajaur Blood Organisation had also accused the thalassemia centre for appointing unexperienced staff. The organisation had also threatened to hold protest over the issue.
