United Arab Emirates (UAE) has claimed to have found the coronavirus treatment using stem cells “which could be a game-changer in the global fight” against the pandemic.
Al Arabiya English quoted Hend Al Otaiba, director of strategic communications of the UAE Foreign Ministry who announced the breakthrough made by the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre.
According to her, the stem cell center has discovered a treatment method that regenerates lung cells and prevents the immune system from overreacting.
While elaborating the treatment mechanism, she said the procedure involves the extraction of stem cells from a patient’s own blood and reintroducing them into the lungs via inhalation of a mist.
She claimed “ this could have a significant impact on our ability to live with the virus until a vaccine is available”.
The initials phase of the clinical trials have been conducted on 73 patients who are said to have made full recoveries with no harmful side effects. Even, the Ministry of Economy of the country has granted a patent for the development of the treatment, the Al Arabiya English reported.
Many of the trial patients are said to be ill with moderate to severe symptoms prior to the treatment and many of them were intubated in an intensive care unit.
More trials are expected to be conducted in the coming weeks to have a clearer understanding of the treatment’s potential. The UAE is said to have recorded 13,038 coronavirus cases so far but has maintained a relatively low death toll with only 111 fatalities.
