ISLAMABAD: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has suspended the repatriation of Afghan refugees for four months due to cold weather in Afghanistan.

Spokesperson of the UNHCR Qiaser Khan Afridi said that the repatriation process will be halted from first of December till 28th of February 2019 due to severe cold. He informed that UNHCR centres in Pakistan and Afghanistan would remain closed during the winter.

UNHCR also announced that registered refugees will not be given financial compensation in case of returning to Afghanistan during the period. The operation will resume from March 2019.
