PESHAWAR: Minister for States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) Lt Gen (Retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch said on Friday that those Afghan refugees who don’t possess legal documents to stay in Pakistan will be sent back in April.
The minister told the National Assembly that the Afghan nationals who have not registered themselves with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) with the help of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will be treated as foreigners, not refugees and they are not entitled to live in Pakistan. He said such refugees will be sent back to Afghanistan in the first week of April.
The process of registration of unregistered Afghan refugees was initiated in 2017. The minister said that according to NADRA data, about one million refugees have registered themselves, while over 400,000 are still unregistered.
