PESHAWAR, 02 December: Different students’ associations on Wednesday held a protest demonstration against raise in fees and hostel dues by the University of Peshawar (UoP) administration.

Students affiliated with different associations gathered near Pearl Lawn on the campus and marched towards VC office. They raised slogans demanding immediate withdrawal of increase in fees.

“Hostel charges in all public sector universities are Rs.12000/- whereas the UoP has been charging us Rs. 26,000/- which is unfair. We demand that UoP fees should be brought at par with other public sector universities and the raise be cancelled immediately,” a protesting student remarked.

They said the government had committed that fees and other dues of flood affected students of Chitral and the IDP students from Waziristan would be written off but the university administration did not do that so far.

Another protester pointed out that Prime Minister Scholarship had been awarded to IDPs and tribal students in all public sector universities of the country but students of UoP had not been benefited from this so far.

Responding to the protest by the students’ associations, the UoP administration said the increase in fees and hostel dues was approved by the university syndicate and is according to rules. However, the dues of IDPs students and Chitral affectees would be waved off.
