PESHAWAR: The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has arrived in Pakistan to discuss reconciliation process with the Taliban.
The US special envoy has arrived a day after Prime Minister Imran Khan revealed that he has received a letter from US President Donald Trump in which he has sought Pakistan’s cooperation for peace talks in Afghanistan. During the visit, Mr Khalilzad will hold talks with Pakistan’s civil and military leadership and seek their advice on amicable solution of the Afghan conflict.
After concluding Pakistan visit, the US envoy will also visit Afghanistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Belgium, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
The US State Department said Mr Khalilzad will keep contact with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah regarding progress in efforts to bring peace to Afghanistan. The US envoy also visited the region last month.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has welcomed the US president’s letter and vowed to cooperate fully in bringing peace to the war-torn country because peace in Afghanistan is must for peace in Pakistan.
