PESHAWAR, November 19: Five more children have been crippled by polio, raising the total number of cases to 253 in Pakistan during the current year.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) reported that poliovirus had been confirmed in the children belonging to Karachi, Balochistan, Khyber Agency and South Waziristan Agency.

Around 160 children have been diagnosed with poliovirus in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), 49 cases in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 26 in Sindh, 3 affectees in Punjab, while 12 cases of poliovirus have been reported from Balochistan.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said Pakistan is responsible for transmitting poliovirus to other countries and it has also warned that besides the condition of polio vaccination certificate for Pakistanis travelling abroad, more restrictions might also be imposed if the country failed to cope with the problem within six months.
