MARDAN: A man has allegedly killed his sister in the name of honour in Mardan 15 years after she married according to her own choice.
Local sources said one Ayaz allegedly opened fire on his sister, Shahida in Kandaghar area of Takht Bhai tehsil on Saturday due to which she, her husband Tariq and two children, Maaz and Aizaz, sustained critical injuries. The injured parents and their children were taken to District Headquarters Hospital Mardan where Shahida succumbed to her injuries. Tariq and one of his children were shifted to Peshawar due to their critical condition.
Sources said Shahida had entered marriage with Tariq according to her own choice 15 years ago which annoyed her family.
The roots of honour killings lie in tribal social norms which remain prevalent across South Asia and dictate the behaviour of women in particular. Honour killing is the homicide of person(s) due to a belief that the victim has brought dishonour upon the family or community. The killing is viewed as reinstating of honour.
Despite legal reforms, the figures of honour killings in Pakistan are alarming.
