PESHAWAR, 24 October: The World Polio Day was observed in all parts of the world, including Pakistan on Saturday.
The purpose behind observing the World Polio Day is to create awareness among the people about the crippling disease. The day is also observed to pay tribute to the US researcher Dr Jonaas Salk for inventing polio vaccine.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries in the world where polio is categorised as endemic viral infection. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently declared Nigeria a polio-free country.
Vaccination efforts in Pakistan have been hampered by threats from extremists and attacks on polio workers.
